Felon Barry Minkow Becomes Pastor and Cons Church Congregation Out of Millions
Last week, Barry Minkow pleaded guilty to embezzling funds from the San Diego Community Bible Church, a U.S. attorney’s statement said. Minkow was already serving a five-year sentence for securities fraud.
According to the plea agreement, Minkow opened unauthorized church bank accounts, forged signatures on checks and used congregation donations as his own personal piggy bank. “Barry Minkow is again convicted of fraud, this time for stealing money from the parishioners of San Diego Community Bible Church,” U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy said. “We stand vigilant against those who cheat and steal without regard to the consequences wrought on their victims.”
In 1988, Minkow was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of 57 fraud charges. After spending approximately seven years in prison he was released. Shortly thereafter he became a pastor claiming to have found religion during his prison term.
In 2011, Minkow was convicted in another scam. A Miami, federal judge sentenced him to five years in prison for involvement in a scam involving homebuilder Lennar Corp. Minkow faces an additional five years from his recent conviction. Sentencing is scheduled for April 7, 2014.
